Google Book Downloader Downloads Books to PDF

Windows: Thanks to Google's drive to add more and more books to the Google Books project, including thousands of public domain volumes, you'll find quite a nice selection to choose from. Google Book Downloader helps you download them to PDF.

Update: I have come to know that use of this application is locking some users out of Google Books because downloading full books from the service is a violation of their terms of service.
Let's get one thing out of the way from the start. Google Book Downloader will not let you pirate books. Apparently this app attempts to download more than the allotted preview of limited-preview books—hence the removal of the link and the lockout by Google. It will however let you download books that are flagged as full-access, such as books in the public domain and books with limited-preview—although you'll only get the preview parts, not the entire book.

While using the application isn't as simple as say, right clicking on a file and saving it, the difficulty level isn't high. Once you've installed the application, fire it up, and feed it some books you want to download. Although the instructions for the Add dialogue box indicate you can use ISBN numbers. Since you're already searching Google Books to find the books you want, you might as well cut and paste the URL for the book at Google Books—that method never failed.

Once you've added your books they'll appear in the download queue. From there start the downloads and let it go. Occasionally as the application pulls down data you'll need to enter a captcha to keep the pipeline open, but other than that it's an unattended process.

Google Book Downloader is freeware, Windows only and requires .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 or above.

Microsoft Office Web Apps Will Be Available to Everyone

Microsoft offered up a Technical Preview of its web-based Office offerings yesterday, but the invites are long since gone. The good news is that anyone who can get a Windows Live sign-in will eventually have access to stripped-down office apps.

ReadWriteWeb notes that a limited preview is being offered to "partners" at the moment, with greater beta availability coming this fall. In the preview, Word documents are read-only, but can be shared and commented on, while PowerPoint and Excel's web versions allow for some basic online editing by anyone the creator gives access to.

Eventually, Office Web Apps will be available to anyone using Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger, and other Live services.

Google Voice Message Playback comes to Gmail

If you're both a Gmail and Google Voice user, you should be thrilled with the latest feature from Gmail Labs: The Google Voice Player feature embeds a voicemail player inside Gmail so you can listen to new messages directly inside Gmail.

To enable it, just hit up the Labs link in Gmail, find the Google Voice player in mail feature, click enable, and save your changes. Now not only can you read your transcribed voicemail from directly inside Gmail—you can listen to it, too. In fact, your message status will even sync to Google Voice, so if you've listened to it in Gmail, it'll show as listened to in Google Voice, too.

iPhone and iPod touch OS 3.1 Available for Download

iPhone/iPod touch only: Apple today announced an update to iPhone OS 3.1, introducing a new "Genius" recommendation feature for the App Store, bug fixes and performance boosters, and several other small but worthwhile updates.

It's also added a Ringtone section to the App Store on your device (for a whopping $1.29 a pop— [Windows guide; Mac guide]). Other than that, Apple's not promising a lot from this update other than support for the newly released iTunes 9, its new features (e.g., Genius Mixes), and a few other nice tweaks. Below is a quick look at some of the other most notable updates from the release notes:

Yahoo Mail Filters Your Inbox by Contacts and Connections

Yahoo's email service rolled out an interesting new feature today that filters your inbox to show only emails from contacts or "connections" to help you get to your most important emails first.

The new filtering features appear in a View From bar right above your inbox. When you view messages from contacts,

Yahoo Mail will display emails only from people you've manually added to your contact list. The slightly broader filter, called Connections, denotes people you've conversed with frequently but never manually added as a contact. You can still see your standard inbox that includes every email, but if you've got an inbox full of email and you want to get to the email you care about most first, filtering by either contacts or connections is a smart way to quickly get there.

Good on Yahoo Mail with this one; it's a feature we'd love to see rolled into other email apps out there. (You listening, Gmail?) If you don't immediately see the update in your Yahoo Mail account, take note: This feature will roll out in the next few weeks to both Classic and the new Yahoo! Mail users who have the Smarter Inbox features enabled. To get these new features, first create a Profile at profiles.yahoo.com and then log back into Yahoo! Mail. Only users in the US and Australia can get it now, but users from many more countries will be eligible soon.

Format a USB Drive as NTFS in Windows XP

Windows XP only: Today's USB flash drives are huge, but they come formatted with the FAT32 limit of 4GB files—if you want to format them as NTFS under Windows XP you'll need a little trick.

Windows XP does have the ability to format drives with the NTFS file system, but you wouldn't know it by looking at the format dialog—normally the option is disabled. To enable it, open up Device Manager and find your USB drive, go to the Properties -> Policies tab and then choose "Optimize for performance". Once you've done this, you'll see the NTFS option in the format dialog.

Readers should be warned, however, that once you've enabled write caching you will need to use the Safely Remove Hardware dialog to avoid losing data—though once you format the drive as NTFS you can switch the write caching back off.

The choice between NTFS and FAT32 isn't cut-and-dry—while NTFS does allow larger file sizes, encryption, compression, and permissions, there's a lot more overhead to using it—and more importantly it won't really work on non-Windows systems. Gmail Search Autocomplete Makes Searching Your Inbox a Breeze

Gmail Labs has released a great new Search Autocomplete feature today that offers search suggestions for all kinds of Gmail searches, from simple search-by-contacts to more advanced search queries—like for specific attachments.

The autocomplete is very smart, too, so when you want to search for a specific attachment type—like photos—you can just choose the has photos autocomplete, and

Gmail will generate the much more complicated filename:(jpg OR jpeg OR png) search operators. Handy, huh?

Likewise, it'll autogenerate the before and after date operators for you (before:yyyy/mm/dd), which have always been too complicated to remember all that well. As always, to enable this feature, just point your browser to Gmail Labs, enable Search Autocomplete, save your changes, and enjoy.

MindRaider Organizes and Visualizes Any Note Style

Windows/Mac/Linux: MindRaider wants to be the place you stash all your sudden thoughts, organizational notes, and inter-connected ideas. That's because it offers links, visualizations, and other tools to help you make sense of it all.

From the outset, MindRaider, a Java app that can run on any system that supports Java, looks like a kind of multi-window outlining program. And it is, in a way, but the idea is to use it as an uber-outline. You can attach files to

notes, or create symbolic links to local files. You can inter-link notes, documents, and outlines, use contextual tagging for an extra layer of finding something later, and use any of the pre-defined categories to segment out your ideas into broad containers. It supports a huge range of note formats, from simple text file to TWiki exports, and has a number of visualizations that help you kinetically wheel your thoughts around and pick what to fill out next.

Honestly? It's an application that would take more than just a glance and quick twiddle with to get comfortable and productive in. That sounds like a deal-breaker to most idealistic productivity minds, of course, but it looks like MindRaider can be pretty powerful, once you get your system rolling with it.

Skype 4 Beta 3 Adds Outlook Support, Bandwidth Manager

Skype has released a third beta of Skype 4 for Windows, which keeps the focus on large-screen video chat and adds a few new (and returning) tools.

Namely, support for Outlook contact importing, abuse reporting, and a "bandwidth manager" that aims to improve call quality are present in the Windows-only beta. The missing button to report call quality to Skype also makes a comeback.

Remote Desktop: TEAM VIEWER

Windows only: Joining the ranks of Crossloop, iRemotePC and LogMeIn, TeamViewer lets you connect to other PCs for remote access, tech support, file sharing and more.

The tiny setup program gives you the option of configuring your PC in host or client mode, or skipping installation altogether (in which case TeamViewer runs without installing anything). I chose the latter option on two PCs: one running XP, the other, Vista. From there I simply entered a numeric ID and password generated by the software, and presto: Instant remote access. In addition to controlling the other PC, I could transfer files and chat with the other user (myself, in this case). By enabling server mode, I was able to switch directions and share my desktop with the other PC—neat for showing presentations, demonstrations, etc.

TeamViewer works around firewalls and promises 1024-bit RSA private/public key exchange and 128-bit RC4 session encoding. In other words, it's pretty secure. It also has at least one advantage over each of the three aforementioned remote-access programs, so if you're interested in connecting to another computer from afar, give TeamViewer a try. The program is free for personal, non-commercial use, and it requires Windows 98 or later.

Internet Explorer Exploit Temporary Fix Now Available

Microsoft will be pushing out an unscheduled security patch for Internet Explorer's recently-discovered vulnerability tomorrow, but you can get a temporary patch from British software security firm Prevx today.
Tech news site TechRadar reports that simply not using IE won't keep the vulnerability from affecting your PC; an estimated 2 million PCs have already been infected. The vulnerability affects IE 6 and above, including Internet Explorer 8. Chances are most users (not reading this) won't get to the Prevx temporary fix before tomorrow, but if anything make sure Windows' software updates are turned on so you get Microsoft's official fix then.

Excel Chart Advisor Suggests the Best Layouts for Your Data

Chart Advisor, a free plug-in for Excel 2007, takes the guess-and-hope element out of making your spreadsheet data presentable. The plug-in adds a single button to Excel's "Insert" toolbar, and clicking it brings up a window with the Advisor's recommended layouts, ranked in order of relevance. Mouse over the chart layouts to see a preview, then click on "Modify Chart" to filter and change the data being used. It's definitely more helpful than Excel's default chart and graph chooser, and helps graphing newbies figure out how to tweak their displays. Chart Advisor is a free plug-in, requires 32-bit Windows XP or Vista and Excel 2007.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2's (Familiar) New Features

Six months after Beta 1 hit the streets, Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 to brave testers. The new beta includes features that make it look like a viable choice of modern browser, like a smart address bar (sound familiar?), tab grouping, private browsing, find in-page, suggested sites related to the current page, and more. Let's take a look at what's coming out in the browser arena.

IE8 Beta 2's Most Useful Features

Smart Address Bar: IE 8 beta 2 includes a Smart Address Bar, that, like Firefox 3's "AwesomeBar," drops down suggestions as-you-type a web site URL gleaned from your favorites, feeds, and history. Unlike Firefox, IE 8 includes headers so you can see where each suggestion comes from.

Tab Grouping: Ever open a bunch of links from a single page in new tabs, and then lose track of which tabs came from what page? IE8's got a nifty "tab grouping" feature that colors your tabs based on their source.

InPrivate Browsing: What with the Smart Address Bar pulling up every site you've visited recently in plain view in its History suggestions, there may be times when you visit a site and have the browser forget it ever happened. IE 8 beta 2's "InPrivate" browsing mode adds an icon to the address bar, and forgets you were ever at a web page when it's enabled.

IE8 Beta 2's Sort-of Useful Features

Favorites Bar: Getting to your bookmarks and feeds is a little easier with a button to expand your Favorites bar, a one-stop bookmarks shop. In the Feeds tab (not shown), any feeds you're subscribed to with new items show up in bold, and any "Web Slices" with new content also appear in bold.

Suggested Sites: When you enable the "Suggested Sites" feature, an item on your toolbar drops down a panel of web sites like the one you're on. This feature is great in theory, but in practice not so much.

Find on Page: This one's a yawner for anyone who's used to Firefox, but apparently IE doesn't already have "find on page," the ability to hit Ctrl+F, type a keyword, and see any instances of it highlighted on the current page.

All in all, IE 8 beta 2 sucks a lot less than one might expect, given IE6 and IE7. It feels like the product is truly catching up to the current state of the browser art. The IE8 beta 2 is a free download for Windows only. (Installation requires a computer restart.)

Zimbra Desktop Takes Yahoo Mail Offline for Free

Windows/Mac/Linux: At the very least, the free, just-released Zimbra Desktop client gives non-paying Yahoo Mail users IMAP-style offline access to their messages. More than that, though, Zimbra adds a few features to Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, or any other POP/IMAP account that could be pretty useful--at least at some point down the road. Message tagging and nested conversation arrows are pretty nice features for any services that don't already have them, but they don't sync back, or work with Gmail's labels. There's also a bare-bones word processor/spreadsheet, a (non-syncing) calendar, and more search options, including attachment filtering. Overall, though, the real benefit is Zimbra's ability to synchronize your outbox and mail folders before you go offline. Zimbra Desktop is a free download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems.

EncryptOnClick Makes Securing Files Really Simple

How to Transfer iPhone Voicemail to Your Computer

When your five-year-old nephew sings "Happy Birthday" to you on your voicemail, you want to keep that message to play back to his friends when he's in college. If you've got an iPhone, there are a few ways to save voicemail audio files to your computer. If you've jailbroken your iPhone, you can SFTP into it and transfer the files to your local hard drive. If not, you can use your computer's line in and free recording software to manually record the message. Here's how.

File Transfer

First, if you haven't already,

jailbreak your iPhone 2.0 (here's the Windows method). This will install an OpenSSH server on your device that lets you transfer files from it to your computer.

On the iPhone, under Settings->Wi-Fi, select the network you have joined to view connection details. Write down the phone's IP address.

Fire up your favorite FTP client.

Using your FTP program, connect to the device's IP address with username root and password alpine (unless you've changed your password). You'll need to use SFTP (secure FTP), not plain FTP.

Once you're connected to the device, browse to /private/var/mobile/Library/Voicemail/ to view the list of VM files. They're saved as .AMR files, which QuickTime can play. Transfer them to your computer and you're done.

Manual Record

If you're not rockin' a jailbroken iPhone (or an iPhone at all), you can also utilize your phone's headphone jack and your computer's line in. Connect the phone to the computer using an audio line and fire up recording software like Audacity. Play the voicemail and record the result with Audacity.

Note, however, that not all phones have standard headphone jacks out—the first generation iPhone has the recessed jack, and other phones often use non-standard headset jacks, too.

If you've ever shared a video with a non-tech-savvy friend just to get reports back that they couldn't get it to play, this application offers a simple solution: Just run your video through MakeInstantPlayer and send the resulting EXE instead (which in my test is about 5 MB bigger than the original). Your friend can simply run the EXE--which bundles the MPlayer media player and everything else they need to play back the file--and start watching. Free Windows utility Tiny Watcher tattles on your system and what's been changed on it without having to stay open and use resources in the background. After running a system scan once at installation, Tiny Watcher checks the registry and system folders to see what's changed since it was last run, as well as offering options to "Remove," "Disable," and search the web for information on system processes and common Windows changes. You have to be really cautious, of course, before deleting or disabling things you don't fully understand, but it's a great way of checking just when and why that mysterious folder at your hard drive root was created, without digging through logs or keeping a monitor open. Tiny Watcher is a free download for Windows systems only.
